Last Meeting was a Great Success

The last meeting was wonderful, each meet we are getting more and more walk-ins, our member Matthew is trying to start a go club at his high school, we’re all hoping that works out well. A good time was had by all, in fact, spirits were so high a librarian had to come and close the door to our room because we were laughing too loudly. There will be a meeting of senior members this coming week where we will discuss the future of the Las Vegas Go Club, and one of the items on the agenda is host a U.S. Go Congress in 2011. That will be exciting.

Last Meeting, Next meeting

Well, last meeting was a success, we had two walk ins interested and we played a few games. James showed up during a break from work, which was nice. There is no meeting this coming Sunday, but the Sunday after there is, so Sunday October 5th, 2008. Hope to see some more of you there!

Anime Vegas

Look for our booth and game expo at the Anime Vegas convention on Monday Sept. 1. The convention is for that entire weekend but we will only be there for Monday the first.

Bot Update

Well, it seems the lvgoclub bot is completely wonky. I had to tweak and recompile it to dissallow undo’s because it grants all undo’s and players get out of any trap by requesting 10 undos. I’m running it from the UC Berkeley mainframe, and there seems to be some kind of connection problem, so the bot drops in and out, Ive seen it lose connection and rejoin a game 20 times in 10 minutes. All this is being worked on and will be remedied in the future. If nothing else it’s a placeholder in our currently low population room.

We now have an official room on KGS

The Las Vegas Go Club now has an official permanent room on the KGS go server. Appropriately named “Las Vegas Go Club”, our club gnugo bot is logged on there 24/7 also. I was told that if the room is not used enough and not enough games are played in the room itself it will be dumped back into the temporary room list. So please try to play in their as much as you can, or atleast idle there if you can, The bot is called “lvgoclub” and is configged to play at about 6 kyu, although it seems in reality it is much closer to 12 kyu, i don’t know why this is just yet, but I will find out. Hope to see many of you this coming Sunday at our usual place and time.

Take Care,

WOH3

New Members!

Today’s meeting was an excellent one. We had two new members show up. Everybody welcome Matt F. and Preston R. They are two nice guys, familiar with the game, and they learn fast. We had a few excellent pair off games, and we played all board types of 19×19, 13×13 and 9×9. The new members were very skilled on the 9×9 boards. Our most skilled member is away at the GO Congress, and wish him a speedy return.

Here are some photos from the meeting:

We look forward to even more members in the near future.

Vegas GO Club A.I. Mascot

The Las Vegas Go club now has a mascot! Well, Sort of, It’s actually just an AI program that plays go on the KGS server. Its name is BAMFBOT and it is unrated at the moment since it is newborn. Please play a few games with it to help it get better and get ranked. I set the AI default level at 6 kyu, but something tells me that ain’t quite happening.

Update 2

In case some of you haven’t found out yet, our club meeting room is still in the Clark County Library, but our room has changed, we are no longer in the Jewel Box Theater, but instead have moved to the “Reader Services Room”, just ask anyone in Reader Services and they should be able to direct you to us.

Update

One of our more talented members Ray K. has everyone in the club jealous because he is attending this years US Go Congress in Portland Oregon.

Then he will spend some time traveling around visiting family. Travel safe Ray, we look forward to seeing you back at meetings in September. Meanwhile, back in Vegas club members are having a great time playing on KGS (The Kiseido Go Server) which has an excellent java client. If any of you want to look for me and play a match or two I can be found under the nickname ‘eccehomo’, which is an allusion to the Book by Nietzsche which means “behold man” and is not a sexual reference. :-)

Update

The room at the Clark County Library on Flamingo is in the process of being finalized. I go in tomorrow to fill out the paperwork, and it looks like we’re probably going to get the Jewel Conference room. I will post again once I get back from filling out the paperwork. Anyone who is interested in showing up should bring a go board if possible, I only have 3 sets.
